DuraCord®

DuraCord® is an amazing fabric for outdoor use - in a hammock or a rug.  It is soft like cotton and virtually indistinguishable from cotton, even to experts.  But that's where the similarity to cotton ends.  DuraCord® is resistant to water, soil, and stains. You can hose it off, or even bleach it.  It is more colourfast than cotton.  It is UV resistant so your hammock or rug will stand up to sun longer.  It is mildew resistant and has excellent resistance to pilling.

Easy Care:  Cleaning is as simple as washing briskly with mild soapy water.  If desired, you can also hose off your hammock or rug.

Bleach resistant:  Bleach can be used for cleaning as it does not affect the color. A 5 to 1 water to household bleach solution can be used.

Colorfast:  Long exposure to the sun will not fade the vibrant colors.

Fast drying:  DuraCord® does not absorb water and dries very fast.

High Strength:  This is a truly lightweight material with heavy duty strength.

Environmentally Friendly:  DuraCord® takes less energy and water to manufacture than many other synthetic fibers.

Mildew Resistant: DuraCord®  is produced with built-in antimicrobials.

Please note that the cleaning methods pictured below apply to our DuraCord® hammocks and other DuraCord® products as well as to the rugs.  The rugs are so gorgeous that you'll use them indoors too. Imagine being able to easily and economically clean and even disinfect a rug!  WOW!  We love these rugs!  We haven't had a rug in our home for years because of air quality concerns, but now that concern is gone because DuraCord® rugs are SO cleanable.

Cotton

Our Cotton hammocks and accessories have the advantage of being made of a natural (not man-made) fiber, from a renewable source (cotton comes from a plant). Cotton fabrics are soft and comfortable. Cotton is strong and durable.

Cotten is slower to dry than our other textiles. Cotton will fade over time in the sun. Bleaching cotton will remove dye (color) as well as stains.

Our cotton rope is twisted 3-ply, for strength and durability.

Polyester

Polyester is a synthetic fiber (man-made), with petroleum as a raw material in its production. The polyester used by Hatteras and Pawleys Island is soft spun to a comfort equal to that of cotton with added outdoor durability.

Polyester is more colorfast than cotton, has good UV resistance, and is more durable. Polyester dries more quickly than cotton. Polyester has excellent mildew resistance. Bleaching is not recommended for polyester.

The polyester rope used by Hatteras and Pawleys Island is twisted 3-ply, for strength and durability.

Hatteras and Pawleys Island quilted hammocks, swings, comfort cubes, etc. are filled with polyester fiber-fill batting or fill.

In comparison with DuraCord®, polyester comes out about even on mildew resistance and resiliency.  Polyester lags behind DuraCord® in terms of abrasion resistance, UV resistance, bleach resistance, soil resistance, pilling resistance, and colorfastness.

Acrylic

Acrylic is the king of our fabrics when it comes to UV resistance in a comfy fabric.  That means it will stand up to a lot of use in the sun. (DuraCord® is just slightly behind.) Acrylic wicks moisture away from the skin and dries quickly. It has excellent colorfastness.

In terms of feel and aesthetics, acrylic is not quite as wonderful as DuraCord®, but is still excellent.  DuraCord® comes out way ahead of acrylic in terms of cleanability and even further ahead in terms of durability.

Olefin

Olefin is a synthetic (man-made) material.

Olefin is lightweight and very comfortable. It wicks moisture away from the skin and dries quickly. Olefin is abrasion resistant and is resistant to deterioration from mildew, perspiration, rot and weather. It is colorfast and is stain and soil resistant. Olefin is UV resistant.

Most stains can be spot cleaned with lukewarm water and soap. Bleach can be used if necessary. It can be hosed off to remove loose dirt.

Nylon

Nylon is a synthetic (man-made) fiber. (It was first produced from coal, but we’re not sure that is still the fossil fuel of choice in its production.)

Nylon is an exceptionally strong fabric, while also being exceptionally lightweight and packable.  Nylon is abrasion resistant, and resistant to damage from oil.  It doesn't readily absorb moisture, and dries quickly.  It is lustrous and resilient.  It is easy to clean.  It can be machine washed in warm water and tumble-dried at a low temperature.

(We couldn't find specific information on colorfastness, but I can only guess that it is relatively colorfast in sunlight because it is used for carpets, upholstery, and curtains.)

and Our Woods and Metals

The wooden and metal components of our Hatteras and Pawleys Island products are meant to take the weather.

Solid Cumaru - (also called Brazilian Teak) It is a dense hardwood that is resistant to rot, or to splitting when exposed to sun.  It naturally weathers to a beautiful, silver-gray patina.  The cumaru used for Hatteras products is harvested from managed forest projects.  Hatteras uses cumaru on most of their hammock spreader bars.

Oak - Used on the spreader bars of Hatteras Classic hammocks and on Pawleys Island hammocks.  It is also used on swing arms and supports.  The oak receives multiple coats (hand-dipped) of marine varnish to seal the wood from the elements.

Southern Cypress - Used in the creation of the Hatteras Roman Arc® hammock and swing stands.  It is bonded by a radio-frequency gluing process and then formed into the award winning arc designs.

Metal - The heaviest steel in the hammock industry is used for our Hatteras and Pawleys Island hammock and swing stands.  The Tri-Beam® hammock stand, an original Hatteras design, easily assembles without the need for any tools.  Spring pins are used for maximum safety of assembly.  In the crafting of the stand foot brackets, the Signature Right Connection® welding process is used, creating a strong 360 degree weld.  A long-lasting Cape Shield powder coat finishing is placed on all steel products.

Our hanging hardware - On a hammock or swing, the greatest amount of stress is placed at the point of the hanging chains and rings.  Our hanging hardware is the largest and heaviest in the hammock industry.  The one-piece ring and chain creates a safe installation while eliminating the loss of the chain when in storage.  Our hardware is plated with zinc for long life in the outdoors.  Every Hatteras or Pawleys Island hammock also includes the tree hooks needed for tree installation.
